Album Review: Sticky Fingers - Land of Pleasure (2014 LP)

With their relentless tour schedule both nationally and across Europe, it’s hard to believe that the Sticky Fingers boys have had enough time to pick their nose, let alone release an album. Yet here they are, Australia’s favourite cheeky Sydneysiders are back with their second offering, Land of Pleasure. A devilishly sweet sophomore to Caress Your Soul, and one that does not disappoint.

The album starts with title track 'Land Of Pleasure', a fantastic album opener that really sets the tone for the entire album. Think reggae soaked guitar licks with an airy vibe to it too and you have Land Of Pleasure in a nutshell.

'Feast Your Eyes' follows suit to its predecessor and carries the reggae flame, but it’s not until single 'Just For You' do we get taken away from this peaceful lull you may have fallen into.

Now, I always personally try and look for the diamonds in the rough when reviewing an album, there must be other gold in amongst that big bad album apart from the singles - surely! Now whilst there is an abundance of gooduns across the album, you’d be hard pressed to convince anyone that 'Just For You'& 'Gold Snafu' are not two of the best, if not, THE two best tracks across the entire album. This is not to say the rest of the album isn’t enjoyable, just that the boys have chosen their releases well.

It’s hard to point a finger at any dry moments across the album as they are few and far between, but if I am to be critical (let’s face it, I’m here as a music critic right?) then I might suggest that the latter half of the album doesn’t have as much bite as its earlier parts, but the difference is very marginal at best, leaving little to zero disappointment for fans.

There is something really captivating and magical about Sticky Fingers, some kind of charming allure that keeps fans sticking around. The boys seem to speak in a language we can all relate to, and their music is so beautifully crafted that even if they don’t speak to you personally, their smooth delivery will tickle your ears along the way. I know I personally feel a strong sense of pride whenever I drive past 'Australia Street' in Newtown and sing that dastardly tune over and over. The boys have done me well and now they’ve done themselves so very well in their 2nd release. Plus, even if Sticky Fingers aren’t your type of thing - the image of Dylan cuddling a kitty is undoubtedly one of the best album covers of 2014.

Cheers to you, you wonderful lads.

Review Score: 9.1 out of 10
